School Snapshot Project

Have you ever wondered what schools in other countries are like?
What they look like, when they begin and end each day, which rites of passage are celebrated? We have. So we started the School Snapshot Project. What’s a School Snapshot? Take a look at this one about teaching in Argentina. Or this one about a school in the U.K. This one isn’t really a School Snapshot but it does explain what bread, Brot, and education have in common, and why we’re collecting School Snapshots.
Here’s how to participate in the School Snapshot Project.
Our goal is to highlight a school somewhere in the world each week. But in order to do this, we need your help.
We need you to tell us about your school!
To facilitate this process, we developed a standard set of 7 interview questions (see below). So all you have to do is answer these questions, find a photo of your school or classroom, tell us a little about who you are and your relation to the school you’re highlighting (teacher, student, student teacher, staff, parent, etc) and send everything to us in an email.
First, briefly answer these 5-7 of the following “interview questions” (your answers don’t have to be long):
1. The Basics.
What’s your school’s name? In which city/country is it located? How many students, teachers and staff do you have? What type of school is it (primary, high school, private, etc)?
2. Yearly Schedule.
When does the school year begin and end? When are school vacations? Which holidays are celebrated with a day off from school?
3. Daily Schedule.
What’s the daily schedule like? If students eat a meal at school, when, where, and what do they eat? What about the teachers?
4. Transportation.
How do students typically get to and from school?
5. Clothing.
What are the rules regarding the clothing that students and teachers wear to school?
6. Parents.
How are parents involved in school life?
7. Traditions.
What is a “coming of age” tradition or ritual for students (or teachers)?
Then, write a couple sentences about yourself (your name, what your role at the school is, your blog or website address if you have one, etc).
And then find a photo of your school or classroom*.
*Please note: If you attach a photo to your email that includes children’s faces, please make sure you have permission from students and parents to do so.
Finally, email the above three items to: info [at] culturallyteaching [dot] com
Please put School Snapshot Project in your subject line.
Here’s what we’ll do:
1. Read and respond to every School Snapshot submitted.
2. Make minor edits for clarity and/or formatting.
3. Assume that the people, including children, gave permission for the photo to be posted on
